The first report on our experience with the
problem in long-term hemodialysis in patients with chronic renal failure at St Mary¢¥s Hospital was made in March 1973.
Since that time, additional 15 patients with chronic renal failure underwent long-term hemodialysis to September 1975.
This report summarizes the results in the second period.
1) Of the 15 patients, 11 underwent renal transplantation successfully and One has been maintained on home-dialysis for over 18 months.
2) Total 869 dialyses were performed on these 15 patients with Kolff¢¥s coil dialyzer.
3) Mean survival time of external arteriovenous shunts was 16 weeks, significantly longer than that in the first period.
4) Monthly requirement of blood transfusion was reduced to 1.9 pints from 4.3 pints. One patient who had been on testosterone did not require blood transfusion at all over 2 months period.
5) With further experience, it was possible to rehabilitate, if partially, more patients (12 out of 15 patients).
